Summer Author Promo Blitz: Interview with Janet Lee Carey author of Dragonswood + Giveaway

SummerAPBsmallbutton1.  Can you tell us something about you and your book Dragonswood?
I grew up in the California redwoods near San Francisco. The woods were so magical, I often imagined running into fairies or dragons on my moonlight walks. I think that enchanted forest made me the fantasy writer I am today. I’ve written eight books for children and young adults. I love crafting novels and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
The first idea for Dragonswood (Book Two of the Wilde Island Chronicles) came when I studied the witch trials in medieval Europe. Women accused of witchcraft were forced to name names under torture. How would it feel to give up a friend’s name and see her dragged in, condemned and burned? I love my friends so, of course, the idea appalled me. I instantly knew I had the beginning of a story here – one of friendship and betrayal. The novel tests Tess’s loyalty to her friends, her family, to her first love, and ultimately to herself.

2.  When have you decided that you want to be a writer?

Those walks in the woods helped, but reading books I loved made me what to pull out a pen and start writing my own novels.

3.  Where do you find your inspiration for your novels? (If it’s not a secret) Have you ever found it in your real life?

Sometimes I hear a song and feel like the nugget of a whole novel is hiding there. Music definitely inspires me. I’m also inspired by sounds of birds and animals. There are wild wolf packs in Dragonswood. I listened to recordings of howling wolves a few times while writing the novel to get into the mood.

4.  Do any of your fictional characters resemble you?

They are all their own people with their own tastes, experiences and backgrounds. That said, all of the characters come from somewhere inside me. It’s my job to identify with each of them in some way. The witch hunter in Dragonswood wants to take revenge on the witches who attacked her and put out her eye when she was a girl– it’s one of reasons she goes on her bloody witch hunts. Would I go that far to take revenge? No. Do I understand the desire to take revenge? You bet. Luckily the pen is mightier than the sword so we writers have other ways of getting even.

Do I resemble Tess? She’s much braver than I am. I’m glad to say I wasn’t abused as a child or forced to give up my friends’ names under torture, but, like Tess, I did run off and seek solace in the forest when I was young. Tess likes to climb the trees in Dragonswood. In my teens I climbed the redwoods after dark and sat in the branches during a rainstorm. I called it “riding the storm.” I still try to climb a tree every year on my birthday, which is in January (a perfectly stormy month!).

5.  Which book is the first one that you’ve read?

The first book I remember reading and loving was called Twig, by Elizabeth Orton Jones, a book about a little girl who met a fairy living under a tin can in her back yard.

6.  Do you have a favorite book?

I love so many. I reread my favorites like Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series, and Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest. When I love an author’s writing style, her characters and her well-drawn world, I like to get back inside the book to experience the adventure again.

7. If you were about to leave in a trip which book would you take with you?

I just went on a trip and took too many books! I always do. If I had to leave to go somewhere today I’d take The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

8. Tell us one thing you’d like to change at people from nowadays.

I’d like to see us taking better care of the earth. Readers can check out the “giving back” page on my website to see the Dragonswood charity link to help save endangered animals.

9. Is there a moment in your life you’d like to live again?
The day I married my husband, Tom.

10. Do you have a message for Romanian readers? Why would you recommend your book?
Hello to Romanian readers. It’s good to meet here on the blog. I’m grateful to book blogs like this one that give us all a chance to connect. I’ve read about Romania’s natural beauty and seen photos of some exquisite castles. I’d love to visit Corvinesti Castle someday.

Why recommend my book? I’ll let some lines from two of my starred reviews speak to that.

~“A fairy tale for those who have given up on believing in them, but still yearn for happily ever after.”

–Kirkus *starred* review

~ “Perfectly crafted combination of history, mythology, and fantasy. . . The political intrigue, mythology of Merlin, and romances that bloom . . . . will have readers racing toward the end and then going back to savor the events more slowly.”
–School Library Journal *starred* review

~ The book trailer
Dragonswood Description:
I see visions in the fire sometimes, images of the past or what is yet to come. The fire-sight does not lie. But I did not see the witch hunter who would ride in to scour our town of sin, so I did not know to run.
Wilde Island is in an uproar over the recent death of its king. The uneasy pact between dragons, fairies, and humans is fraying and the royal witch hunter begins a vengeful quest to hunt down girls with fire in their hearts and sparks in their soul.
Strong-willed Tess, a blacksmith’s daughter from a tiny hamlet near the mysterious Dragonswood, wants more for herself than a husband and a house to keep. But in times like these wanting more can be dangerous.
Accused of witchery, Tess and her two friends are forced to flee the violent witch hunter. The journey is bleaker than they ever imagined and they have no choice but to accept when an enigmatic huntsman offers them shelter in the dangerous Dragonswood. Staying with him poses risks of its own: Tess has no idea how to handle the attraction she feels for him—or the elusive call she hears from the heart of the Dragonswood.

Need – Want 2 ~ Contemporary Romance Adult

Inkspell Publishing

Author: Stephanie Lawton
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 17th, 2013
Length: Super Novel
ISBN Print: 978-1-939590-08-4
ISBN ePub: 978-1-939590-07-7

Isaac Laroche is cursed. All he wants to do is hide out and feel sorry for himself. Never mind that he got caught sleeping with his seventeen-year-old piano student, or that he abandoned her when the truth was exposed.

Isaac’s feisty high school sweetheart has different plans. Heather Swann has returned to their hometown of Mobile, Alabama, to regroup after breaking up with her troll of a fiancé. She’s restless and looking for a diversion, but she bites off more than she can chew when she sets her sights on rehabilitating Isaac with her unorthodox sexual, mental, and physical plans.

The two quickly reconnect, but their happiness is threatened by family secrets, old vendettas and the death of a beloved father-figure.

Can Heather handle Isaac’s baggage, or will her own come back to haunt them both?

About the Author:

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

1. Can you tell us something about you and your book Need ?

NEED is the adult companion novel to WANT, a New Adult title released last year. While the first book was told from 17-year-old Juli’s perspective, NEED picks up about three months after the end of WANT and is told from 28-year-old Isaac’s point of view. Things ended badly for him and he’s now trying to pick up the pieces. Pretty hard to do when the whole town thinks you’re a sexual predator or at least a pathetic womanizer. He’s a character you love to hate, but his redemption is a wild ride.

2. When have you decided that you want to be a writer?

I always loved to read and in college I decided I wanted to do jobs that involved nonfiction writing (professional publications, newspapers, etc.) but I didn’t begin writing fiction until four years ago when we moved from the Midwest United States to the Deep South. Although it’s still the United States, it might as well be a different country! I think writing was a way to work through the epic culture shock.

3. Where do you find your inspiration for your novels? (If it’s not a secret) Have you ever found it in your real life?

Inspiration almost always comes from real life. I love contemporary novels and firmly believe truth is stranger than fiction, so I look for ideas in everyday occurrences. This doesn’t mean my books are autobiographical – they aren’t. I just like to build them around grains of truth to make them more believable. I also watch a lot of educational shows and documentaries. I’m always amazed at how often history repeats itself and how those events can be applied to current situations.

4. Do any of your fictional characters resemble you?

Yes. I am a sex-fiend dominatrix like Heather Swann. (KIDDING!) I think most writers put bits of themselves into their characters, though perhaps not consciously. In this series, I’m probably a combination of Juli, her mom and jovial Dave Gaston. But then I can kind of identify with Isaac’s morose outlook. But I can also appreciate Heather’s wacked-out sense of humor and take-charge attitude. Like I said, there are little pieces of me all throughout the books, but none of the characters are based on me or anyone in particular.

5. Which book is the first one that you’ve read?

Wow, I don’t remember the first book I read, but there was a series of children’s nonfiction books that my parents read to me and that I learned to read from. They featured historical figures and I remember being fascinated by the one about Louis Pasteur and little soldiers inside vaccines that helped us not get sick. I also loved the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

6. Do you have a favorite book?

Hands down, my favorite is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. There’s so much wit and hidden humor if you know where to look for it.

7. If you were about to leave in a trip which book would you take with you?

I’d take my Kindle because I have an insane back-log of books to be read. I’ve been on a New Adult kick so I’d probably dive into one of those.

8. Tell us one thing you’d like to change at people from nowadays. [you mean about people? not sure I understand the question]

One thing I love about living in the South is that manners still matter. Chivalry isn’t dead here, and nearly everyone is polite. People still say „please” and „thank you” and hold doors for one another. Men call women „ma’am” and women address men as „sir.” I love the respect those titles infer. Little things like that make the hustle of everyday life so much more bearable.

9. Is there a moment in your life you’d like to live again?

Oh man, there are so many dumb mistakes I’ve made that I’d like to go back and correct! There are also some private moments I’d like to experience again (and again, and again, lol!). Otherwise, there’s nothing I’d like to go back and relive because I believe the only way to live is to keep pushing forward.

10. Do you have a message for Romanian readers? Why would you recommend your book?

I’d recommend NEED simply because it’s sexy and insane! I love reading the reviews because they’re like, „WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!” Even if it’s not your cup of tea, it’ll grab you by the shirt collar and shake you until it gets your attention. I promise, you’ll be thinking about this book for a long time after you read the last page. 🙂

1. Can you tell us something about you and your book Reconnaissance?
Reconnaissance is the second book in my Paradise Reclaimed trilogy. You can read the books out of order, though, and it will stand alone without getting too complicated. It’s about the colony that has landed on Paradise 21. In the first book, the threat was so small, they couldn’t see it. So this time around, I wanted to give my readers giant monster aliens for fun!

2. When have you decided that you want to be a writer?
I’ve written all my life, and I’ve always enjoyed reading. I started writing seriously about seven years ago. My first book, The Voices of Ire, took two and a half years to write! Now I can write a book in 2-3 months depending on the length and genre.

3. Where do you find your inspiration for your novels? (If it’s not a secret) Have you ever found it in your real life?
All of my books are a part of me and my experiences. I find inspiration everywhere I go, but especially in movies. When I come home from going to the movies, it’s like my entire brain is on fire.

4. Do any of your fictional characters resemble you?
All of them have part of me in them- even the bad ones! Which part, I’m not telling!

5. Which book is the first one that you’ve read?
My very first book ever? Maybe it was Green Eggs and Ham. I’m not sure. I read a lot of Tad Williams and Christopher Pike growing up as a teen.

6. Do you have a favorite book?
I LOVE Jane Eyre. I really identity with her character and admire her choices in the book.

7. If you were about to leave in a trip which book would you take with you?
I’d take my shiny new Ipad because it has a ton of books on it! If I had to choose one, though, I’d pick Game of Thrones because that’s taking me forever to read, and it would occupy my time for a while. It’s great writing and a great story, but it’s not easy reading.

8. Tell us one thing you’d like to change at people from nowadays.
I’d LOVE for people to be more polite and more positive. You can achieve so much in life just by thinking positively.

9. Is there a moment in your life you’d like to live again?
The day I went to the Star Wars exhibit at the Boston Museum of Science. That day was the bomb.

10. Do you have a message for Romanian readers? Why would you recommend your book?
I hope you enjoy my book! I recommend it to anyone looking for a happy ever after story. If you enjoy Star Wars and Star Trek, then you’ll like this book.

Shadow of Time review

OMG! WOW! AWSOME!…..are NOT enough! This boook was sooo amazing, LOVED IT!

I loved the author writting style, the world, the characters and of course THE STORY! Another thing that I love so so much is that I discovered that the cover is so related with the story. I hope this made you curious!

Here it is the cover:

When I first read the book description on goodreads I was thinking: OMG! I NEEED this BOOK!! The part of its description that intrigued me most is this one: „Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. „. I was so so intrigued by this part, and I have to admit that I wasn’t dissapointed.

Thank you so so much Jen for giving me the opportunity to read your amazing Shadow of Time!

The book tells us the story of Hanna. She is 23 years old and she falls in love with a younger guy named Josh. I hope you won’t say that this is odd, because these things really happen so I can say that I am glad that I’ve read a book in which things are like in reality…..hope you all understand what I am saying. Hanna also has a brother, Ben and I was glad that their friendship was a strong one. I loved Hannah character, she is a strong character and I love her and I love her and Josh.

All the characters are so well defined and I loved all of them. Jen created them so so wonderful, she is an expert with words.

I was so happy to learn so many things about native Americans and about Navajo reservation. After I read the book, I have to admit that I had googled Navajo and I spent hours watching pictures of this beautiful place. I was placing Hanna, Josh and all the characters in there and I loved what I imagined.

It is hard for me to write this review without revealing spoilers:(. Try this novel! You won’t regret it! You will love everything about it!

This was my first Paranormal book and I loved it!

5 stars from me!
